In the late Flip Wilson's comedy routine he told how he was approached by a local bully demanding to know what was written on the paper that Flip was holding. After some back and forth, Flip said it was a list of the people he could whip. The bully wanted to know if he was on the list. Flip refused to tell him but, after more agitated back and forth, Flip gave in and threatened to take the bully's name off the list. It was Flip's delivery that made it funny: style and substance became one.

But this is not that kind of list.

Rather, it is the result of me reflecting upon sources of first-hand support  that encouraged and influenced my inventive impulses as well as my interests and goals as an educator.

On the list are family, friends, peers, employers and students. Aside from family, I am certain that I owe most to my students. Being privileged to work with bright, young creative minds has always kept me productive.

When I mentioned to Gill  that I planned to assemble a list, she asked if I was preparing for my life to flash before my eyes and pointed me towards a recent news item that she thought I would appreciate. I must admit that A Replay of Life: What Happens in Our Brain when we Die is interesting and more than a little provocative.

But brain activity notwithstanding, this page is just me indulging in a little nostalgia while acknowledging that nothing I have thought or made has been produced in a vacuum.

The list - people that I know or have known personally and to whom I am most grateful - is in roughly chronological order and has been expanding as time passes and memory permits.

It interests and pleases me to note how gender influences have evolved over time. As a child, I attended a boys' school and my first teaching position was in a boys' school. Hence the early dominance of male influencers.
In psychology, 'a significant other' is any person who has
importance to an individual's life or well-being.
In sociology,
it describes any person with influence on an individual's
 self-concept.
